Yarra and Botanics Walk discussing 'Mad Mabel' by Sally Hepworth

Yarra and Botanics Walk discussing 'Mad Mabel' by Sally Hepworth

We'll meet at the spot where Fed Square meets the Princes Bridge over the Yarra (near the pedestrian crossing closest to the river from Flinders St, on the Fed Square side). We'll walk for about 6km along the Yarra River, through the Botanic Gardens and back along the river to Federation Square for a coffee after the walk. This month, we're reading and talking about 'Mad Mabel' by Sally Hepworth The blurb: "In 1959, at just fifteen years of age, Mabel Waller became the youngest Australian in history to be convicted of murder. In 2025, on a quiet Melbourne lane, an elderly man is found dead by his neighbour, 81-year-old Elsie Fitzpatrick. No one suspects any foul play. Until they discover Elsie's past. In the 1950s, her name was not Elsie. It was Mabel. She is known around the world as Mad Mabel. But is she mad? More importantly, is she guilty? When the police open a new investigation and the media descend upon her, the elderly Mabel decides it's time to set the record straight. In a world first, at the age of 81, Mabel Waller is speaking. New York Times bestselling author Sally Hepworth is at her finest in this twisty, compulsive thriller of friendship, family and murder. Or is it justice . . . ?" Goodreads rating: 4.40 How does a walking bookclub work? Like a normal bookclub, we talk about the book, what else we're reading, have read, or want to read (as well as a few tangents into life outside literature!) but we do it while walking around Melbourne and then over a coffee. We often split into smaller groups as we walk, but we also regroup through the walk. Should I read the book beforehand? The conversation will be more interesting if you do, but you can still come along if you haven't finished it yet! Do I need to bring anything? **Comfy** walking shoes, drinking water, some money for coffee or a bite to eat after if you wish. No need to bring the book unless you want to. No shows No shows (RSVPing yes and not attending) mean the group waits unnecessarily for those who are not coming, thinking you are running a little late. It’s absolutely fine to change your rsvp for any reason up until the walk begins, and you don’t need to leave a comment, send a message or give a reason, but if you don't click that 'change rsvp' button, you may be removed from the group. Membership Fee Did you know that while it is free to attend most events, Meetup charges organisers about $600 a year to organise a group? Members of the Walking Book Club are asked to pay a membership fee of $10 per year (not per event) to help cover this cost. When you join the group, you'll be automatically given a three month trial so you can see what the group is like, without needing to make any payment. If you would like to continue attending events after this, please follow Meetup's instructions to pay the $6.50US/approx $10AUD fee once per year (or contact group organisers if you would prefer to make payment using paypal, payID, cash or bank transfer).

Short Sunday stroll in Mt Rogers Reserve - off leash tracks, city views

A Sunday stroll in Mt Rogers Reserve! Join Jenny on this lovely northside walk featuring lots of relaxed off leash time for our dogs in a contained, bush-like reserve, with some nice city views for us humans too. The walk is approximately 3 km along well-formed dirt tracks with some gentle undulations, looping around the base of Mt Rogers. It will take approximately 60 minutes with a group. Our route enters off leash space pretty much straight away, but we will manage how and when each dog starts their off leash time depending on the mix of dogs on the day. The walk starts and ends at the Mt Rogers Reserve carpark at the end of Wickens Place in Fraser. There is plenty of free parking here. The excellent [Fraser Café](https://fraser-cafe.com.au) is very short drive away for pre or post walk coffees and meals, as well as access to toilets. Important info: * You walk entirely at your own risk and you are wholly responsible for your own, and your dog's, behaviour; by rsvping 'yes' to this walk you understand and agree to this condition. * All off-leash activities are at the discretion of the walk guide. If for any reason they feel any dog should be back on lead, please respect their decision, as they are trying to ensure everyone has a pleasant experience. * We ask $7.50 per adult to be paid by card to the guide at the beginning of the walk - children (under 18) walk free of charge. The charge helps cover our meetup subscription, insurance, internet, petrol, and other costs. We will gladly refund this if you are not happy for any reason. * For more information about how we operate our walks, go to our [FAQ page](https://www.canberradogwalks.com.au/canberra-walks-guided-walks-faqs/).

Magic Mind & Peak Consciousness: Cultivating Psychic Abilities - Dr. Alex de Foe

**What if psychical abilities (psi) can be cultivated in earlier life?** What are the implications for modern society and our perception of the world? A new theory based on entropy and perception may hold the answers... After 70+ years of controlled studies into psychical phenomena, scholars still lack a cohesive theory of what makes them possible.... **In this presentation, Dr Alex De Foe** draws on his 15+ years of research to model psi as an emergent lifespan experience - understanding it in relation to neural development and entropy, experiences often reported by children. Drawing upon the "free energy model" in perception and social neuroscience, Alex will make the case for cultivation of psi in pivotal states of consciousness. Part 2 will focus on experiential analysis to support the argument, including case studies and a short practice task called 'Image Streaming' that engages aspects of the mind at the periphery of experience. **Image Streaming** is a technique that bridges the divide between the conscious, unconscious, and super-conscious mind, related to Michael Thalbourne's concept of 'transliminality', in which material flows between these dimensions of mind seamlessly. **Case studies will be presented from:** * Research into out-of-body experiences (OBEs) and lucid dreams * A new theory on archetypes and the collective unconscious * Speculative accounts at the bridge between spiritual emergence and spiritual 'emergency' **About Dr. Alexander De Foe (PhD, M Couns):** * Academic at Monash University (2021-2026). * Runs a research program on mindfulness/consciousness * At RMIT University (2016-2021), he managed a virtual reality lab focusing on embodied cognition and social neuroscience. * Published over 30 peer-reviewed studies/papers on consciousness, perception, and general psychology. * Chair of the Australian Centre for Consciousness Studies * Committee Member of the Australian Institute of Parapsychological Research * Associate Editor at the Anthropology of Consciousness Journal. **Post-Event Social Lunch Hangout (12.45 - 1.45pm)** NOTE: TRYING OUT NEW LUNCH VENUE... Afterwards, you are invited to lunch with everyone at **Gopal's Restaurant** (5min walk from the venue) **PLEASE NOTE:** * **11AM Start -** Please be considerate and arrive early. * **$10 Cover Charge:** Room hire, facilities, and running costs.

Community Assembly - AI & Data Centres

Artificial intelligence and data centres are reshaping how we live, work, and use energy. Right now, the Federal Government is asking for input to influence how this important technology shapes our future. This is a real opportunity for community voices to reach the people making decisions about our collective future. The problem is that formal consultation processes can feel inaccessible; full of technical jargon, unclear on process, and easy to scroll past. That's exactly why we're running this community assembly. Rather than feeling overwhelmed or just venting into the void, come and do something about it. This is a free, volunteer-run, in-person session designed to give you: * Context — a plain-English overview of the inquiry and what's at stake for our communities, environment, and economy * Space — a safe, welcoming environment for open discussion, whatever your background or level of expertise * Support — practical guidance to help you formulate and submit your own perspective directly to the inquiry.
No technical expertise required. Just curiosity and a willingness to have your say. We believe that diverse perspectives lead to richer outcomes, and on something as consequential as AI and data centres, we need as many of them as possible! Come and help shape a future we can all look forward to. Register here for a free ticket: https://events.humanitix.com/community-assembly-ai-and-data-centres

The Sacred Pause - A Winter Solstice Ceremony

Winter solstice is the longest night of the year. The moment the earth stands still before the light begins its slow and gentle return. And this year the solstice arrives under a waning crescent moon - one of the most potent times in the lunar cycle for surrender and deep inner reflection. The waning crescent whispers to us to let go. To clear what no longer belongs. To make space for what is coming. This is not a coincidence. This is an invitation. Award winning Reiki Master 2025 Suzi (from Healing Moods) and Voice for Spirit Connie Rose are coming together to hold this sacred space for you. Two hours of deep nourishment for your mind, body and spirit at this powerful convergence of solstice and lunar energy. Together we will move through: Yoga nidra to bring you into a place of deep rest and surrender. A group deep healing reset with Reiki and Seichim to restore and realign your energy field. Intuitive movement to allow your body to express and release what words cannot. Spirit connection to open you to messages of love and guidance from those who walk beside you. Sacred space to rest, receive and come back to yourself. Come and be held as the darkness gives way to the returning light. Open to all. No experience necessary. Simply bring yourself and an open heart. Winter is asking you to stop. We are holding the space for you to actually do it. Spaces are strictly limited. - only 10 spaces Bring a friend for a discount x Book Now: [https://events.humanitix.com/the-sacred-pause-a-winter-solstice-ceremony/tickets](https://events.humanitix.com/the-sacred-pause-a-winter-solstice-ceremony/tickets?fbclid=IwY2xjawSYUbRleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETExT0dMZGkySWgyM3BmMTY4c3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHhfiSLMQ9qziil5t_l-tnBoj3C79oNqyM4YBz_xRmX5zCQzB3qYt1vWciOrU_aem_HlQp65Lmp89iQMop-d4F_Q)

Winter Solstice Day Retreat

Winter Solstice Day Retreat

The winter solstice marks a threshold moment. Cultures have gathered for eons to recognise cosmic events, not because we are promised some radical transformation, but because shared ritual cultivates fertile ground for a meaningful life through reflection, connection and growth. Rituals help us digest change, build resilience, and experience and express that which may not be so accessible in our day-to-day lives. This winter solstice day retreat is an opportunity to pause, reflect and explore what it means to loosen your grip, release a little clinging and grasping to open to a quality of presence with a little less of the magnetism of attachment. The longest night calls for an acknowledgement of darkness. Through recognition and ritual, we will embrace the darkness as part of the natural cycle of life, welcoming the perspectives it offers before orienting ourselves towards the illumination of the renewing sun. Through Asana, Kriya, Japa mantra and meditation, we will spiral inwards, using practices to encourage self-inquiry, release and mark transitions to more fully experience our own lives. **What to Expect** Cultivate tapas through asana. Cleanse and release with kriya. Reflect and integrate through journaling. Explore the potency of japa mantra. Soften and renew with meditation. Warming, nourishing vegan food, and time to connect and rest. **What to Bring** Bring a journal and pen. Come dressed in comfortable, layered clothing suited to movement and stillness. Mats, cushions and blankets are provided, though you're welcome to bring your own. *Cautions* If you are pregnant, have had recent surgery or have any other significant medical condition, please be in touch with Jessie before you book - 0477 166 867 [BOOK HERE](https://momence.com/l/R5hJnoAd)

Her Trail | Women's Business Walk (Cronulla Loop Track)

Research shows walking boosts creativity by up to 60%. For women building a business, that's not a wellness perk, that's a competitive edge. Her Trail is our monthly business walk for women who are actively building something. Whether you're still figuring out your direction or already deep in the work, this is a space to think out loud, talk through what you're working on, and walk alongside other women doing the same. Most women come on their own, so don’t worry if you’re joining solo, new faces are always welcome 🤍 📍 **Meeting Point:** **Barefoot on the Beach Cafe** The Barefoot on the Beach Cafe is about a 5–10 minute walk from Cronulla train station. We’ll meet here first, grab a coffee or snack if you like, then head off together along the Cronulla Esplanade, a beautiful coastal path with ocean views the whole way. If you can’t find us, just send us a message here on Meetup. We’ll keep an eye on it. ⏱️ **Meeting Time:** **2:00 PM** Try to get there a bit early if you can. To avoid a no-show, make sure you **update your RSVP before 9am** of the morning of the meetup (i.e. Sunday morning 9am). **This also applies to those on the Waitlist**. If you are on the waitlist, there is a chance you will be moved to the "Going" list, so if you will no longer attend, ensure you change your RSVP to "Not going" by 9am (day of event). **Questions:** If you have any questions, please ask. Note that the organiser(s) may be busy in the hours leading up to the event, so if you have any questions, please ask them early enough. Note that if your question has been addressed in this description and you simply have not bothered to read it, you may not get a response. And of course you won't know that if you haven't read this, but then who's fault is that? If this all makes sense and you agree, come join us for some good wholesome fun. See you at the park! **Location:** We play in the large flat open area opposite the Kiosk/Cafe (with toilets) and children's playground. Read about the fun and addictive sport of Pickleball below!!!!! Pickleball is a paddle sport you can learn in minutes and play for a lifetime. It brings together elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong to create a sport that’s fun for all ages and skill levels, but gets fast-paced and exhilarating at competitive levels. How is pickleball different to other net sports? * It’s easier to pick up than many net sports * It’s lower impact than tennis, so it’s easier on the body * It focuses on quick reflexes and aiming, rather than spiking the ball, powerful serves, or running speed These differences open pickleball up to a greater range of players. Whether you’ve been playing tennis your whole life, or you’re walking onto a court for the first time; whether you’re young, old, or in between; whether you’re strategic and competitive, or just want to get involved in something fun, social, or active… pickleball is for you.
