Philosophy Roundtable: Art

A painting that brings a person to tears. A banana worth 6.4 million dollars. A photograph ending a war. What is behind these phenomena? Please join us this Sunday to discuss the Philosophy of Art, where it comes from, what makes it powerful and why it is a universal across time and cultures. We will meet at the Captain Melville at 2pm for a 2:15pm start sharp. **Please note the new $5 mandatory donation entry fee** (cash or transfer on day) to help with MeetUp subscription costs, venue costs, etc. There is no pre-requisite preparation necessary, nor a philosophical background, all that is required is a curious mind. These discussions are both a Socrates Cafe style discussion and lively metaphysical dojo, in the spirit of learning and friendly debate, so please feel free to challenge assumptions and be prepared to have your own assumptions challenged. This event is also posted to the Socrates Cafe group. We will explore the topic through a range of questions, including: **What is Art?** * What comes to mind when we use the word ‘Art’? What are the categories of objects or activities that you would consider to be art? * Which of these are art?: https://drive.google.com/drive/u/1/folders/1_1nl2_GKbGzzSbXsRRsnAZlkmNVqWPjm **Emotion** * Is art a luxury or necessity in life? Is it essential to happiness? * Why is art so effective at making us feel powerful emotions, even when we know it doesn’t represent reality? Are these ‘true’ emotions, or somehow different / simulated? * Why do we sometimes seek our art that makes us feel sad? **Objectivity** * Is there such a thing as objectively bad art? * Are there intrinsic properties that make something aesthetic (beautiful)? Are they universal? * Are there objective standards of ‘taste’? Can one person be said to have better taste than another? If so, on what basis or criteria? **Value** * What gives art its value? Why do we consider replicas differently? Is naturally occurring beauty different to art? * What compels humans towards art? Is there an evolutionary / biological explanation for the seemingly wasteful expenditure of resources on outputs that have no practical function? **Creativity** * Are only humans able to appreciate art? * Are only humans creative? * Is there such a thing as something truly new, or is every idea or expression a recombination of existing inputs into a different configuration of outputs? * Can a machine be creative? If not, what is the constraint? * Could we ever regard AI-creativity in the same way as that of a human? Hope to see you there!

Since I’ve traveled to 50 countries before settling here in Melbourne, the idea of combining travel, daily living, and creating art is a massive passion of mine. To kick off our community of "dreamers and doers," we are hosting a relaxed weekend coffee meetup to connect, share, and get inspired. Whether you are a full-time professional artist or an entrepreneur exploring painting like I am, this is a casual space to meet face-to-face and build our local network over a great cup of Melbourne coffee. **Here is what we’ll be doing:** * 🎨 **Show & Tell:** Bring a sketchbook, your iPad, or just pull up some photos of your work on your phone. Let's celebrate what everyone is currently creating or exploring! * 🤝 **Network & Connect:** Swap Instagram handles, share industry contacts, and find your new creative accountability buddies. * 🌍 **Main Topic - Art Residencies & Coliving:** Have you ever done an art residency? Are you dreaming of joining a creative coliving space overseas or right here in Australia? Let's share resources, research, and dreams about blending travel with our artistic practices. **What to bring:** * A piece of your art (physical or digital) or a work-in-progress to share. * Your business cards, portfolio links, or social handles. * Any info, questions, or experiences you have regarding art residencies! I can't wait to meet you all and hear about your creative journeys. RSVP so I can make sure we grab a big enough table!

School of life - Sydney fan meetup, difficult questions deck

This event is in person! To find the room, walk into the car parking area from the street at 14 Frances St, walk to the end of the car park (to the left of the building) and enter in the side pedestrian gate. Walk straight down the pathway to the back building and up the stairs. Look for the signs to Skyview Hall! As part of the school of life Sydney meetup we host a discussion focused on the difficult questions deck. We flip a difficult question and then ask the group to answer. Some examples include, "what makes a good listener?" and "if you could own any piece of art, what would it be?", "who was a childhood role model other than your parents?" Join us for questions like these and more. We hope to have you join us in this journey of self discovery. If you’re reading this, you’re invited. Please don’t feel like you “won’t be welcome” just because you’re new, demographically different from the average member, or hate the School of Life and everything it stands for. You’ll be fine! We usually meet every 3rd Sunday of the month at 4pm. 0438481143 to contact us if you get lost. This event is free for first time participants, then $10 if you are coming back for more! The cost covers the room hire, snacks and helps with making sure people are committed to attending. If you struggle to pay the cost, please get in touch to talk about it. You can also pay via Payid to 0438481143

Master the Art of Better Decisions

This interactive session equips you with practical tools to enhance Emotional Intelligence (EI), manage cognitive biases and make better decisions by mastering System 1 (emotional reactivity) and System 2 (logical analysis) thinking where EI serves as the vital bridge between the two. By attending this session you will unlock: * Improved decision making: Reduce the "hidden tax" of cognitive shortcuts. Know when to trust our 'gut feelings' and when to switch to rational thought. * Greater performance under pressure: Learn to recognise triggers and pivot from reactive impulses to deliberate, strategic choices when the stakes are high. * Better collaboration: When you regulate your own System 1 responses, psychological safety flourishes, which leads to better collaboration. * Increased resilience: Build a team that doesn’t just survive volatility but thrives in it. ***Facilitators*** ***[Caidryn Roder](https://www.linkedin.com/in/caidyrn/):*** *Co-founded ProSocia and has over 20 years of experience helping people and organisations thrive. Could the Federal Budget Cost You Thousands?

## **What every property investor needs to know about the changes happening to negative gearing, capital gains tax and trust taxation — BEFORE the rules change.** The Federal Budget contained several major proposals that could significantly impact how Australians invest in property. Changes have been proposed to: * Negative gearing * Capital gains tax * Discretionary trusts For many investors, these structures form the foundation of their wealth creation strategy. But how would these changes actually work? Who could be affected? What opportunities still exist? And what should investors be thinking about now? At our [Melbourne meetup](https://events.resultsmentoring.com/meetup-vic.html?utm_source=meetup&utm_campaign=drn), **tax specialist Brent McCartney** will break down the proposed changes and explain what they could mean for property investors, developers, renovators and business owners. **What you'll learn...** **Negative Gearing Changes** **Discover:** ✓ What the Government has announced ✓ Which properties may be protected under grandfathering provisions ✓ How the proposed rules could affect future purchases ✓ The implications for investors buying established versus new properties **Capital Gains Tax Changes** **Learn:** ✓ How the current 50% CGT discount could change ✓ The proposed inflation-indexed alternative ✓ What the changes could mean for future property profits ✓ How transitional rules may apply to existing properties **Trust taxation Changes** **Understand:** ✓ The proposed 30% minimum tax on discretionary trusts ✓ Why the Government says the changes are necessary ✓ How family trusts may be affected ✓ Potential restructuring opportunities available during the transition period ✓ Real-world examples illustrating the potential financial impact **[RSVP now to attend FREE in-person or via Zoom](https://events.resultsmentoring.com/meetup-vic.html?utm_source=meetup&utm_campaign=drn)** **Why This Matters** Many investors spend years building portfolios based on rules that can change with a single Budget announcement. The investors who understand the implications early have more options, more time to plan and greater confidence when making future decisions. This session is not about politics. It's about understanding the proposed changes and making informed investment decisions. The proposed Budget changes could have significant implications for how Australians invest, structure and grow their wealth through property. Whether you own one investment property or a large portfolio, this is an opportunity to understand the potential impact before important decisions need to be made. **Important:** If you plan to attend, please click the RSVP link below and register. This helps us manage venue numbers and ensures you receive event reminders. **[RSVP now to attend FREE in-person or via Zoom](https://events.resultsmentoring.com/meetup-vic.html?utm_source=meetup&utm_campaign=drn)** **FAQ's** **-> Can I bring someone else along?** Yes, you are welcome to bring anyone who is interested in property investing, renovating, developing - it's all about learning and networking with like-minded investors. Please ask them to RSVP so that we know how many people are coming. **-> What are you selling?** Nothing, these meetups are all about learning and networking with like-minded people. **-> What are my Parking options?** There is plenty of parking in the street. We look forward to seeing you there. Best regards, – Tony **PS** You can attend in person or online by **[clicking here](https://events.resultsmentoring.com/meetup-vic.html?utm_source=meetup&utm_campaign=drn)**

Make sure to also connect with our community on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/openheartmeditation INTRODUCTION On the surface level Open Heart Meditation is a very simple yet effective way to shut the busy mind down, relax and unwind, and to reconnect with peace. Many people come as a quick way to recharge for the week and to find inner peace. On a deeper level Open Heart Meditation is about opening the heart to know your True Self and to connect with our Creator - the ultimate source of love and life - what we call "True Source". The divine energy from True Source (the Reiki energy) is a beautiful restorative energy of healing, joy, love and blessings. It's suitable for people from all religions because it's non denominational and helps people to better connect with their chosen spiritual path - experientially through the heart (rather than through the head with more thinking and theory). When you are connected to this abundant source of life energy every day, you will in turn receive life more abundantly. It will improve your overall happiness, health, and general well-being. You will find yourself more calm and less reactive; your choices in life will be more sound and centred; and you will be more in line with your True Self - all beyond the limited intelligence of the mind, other worldly wisdoms, and fluctuating emotions. The greater purpose of this practice for those who wish to pursue it beyond relaxation and healing is to return home - back to our Creator from where we all originated from - the ultimate source of life and unconditional love. Open Heart Meditation is therefore very different to many popular types of meditation, such as Mindfulness Meditation for the following reasons: • It does not rely on the mind or observation, or on emotions, but rather it is focused on the heart. We teach you how to easily shut the mind down, to open the heart, and sense from it. • Instead of practicing detachment, we teach you to attach to the source of abundant life first. This will then help you detach from all forms of negativities naturally without any effort. In doing so, this will gradually iron out negative reactive responses, smoothing your life's path. • This blessing, is a gift of Grace and cannot be earned by greater effort. The only thing one can do is to just receive this gift from True Source with an open heart, in gratitude. This group is dedicated to those who would like to learn, practice and share about Open Heart Meditation. Everyone is welcome to join, learn and contribute in a positive, safe and caring environment. :-) For more information about Open Heart Meditation: https://naturalwayofliving.com/wellness-programs/open-heart-meditation/ PERTH TESTIMONIALS "We are so incredibly blessed with Open Heart Meditation - the truth that we've learnt and discovered for ourselves; the lovely community; and what it is doing for our soul permanently. So grateful for this huge blessing. Thank you all for what is coming to my first year with you smiley lot." Ronnie Chua, Perth Australia "Isn't it lovely when you intend to pray for something and immediately feel the love pour down like a bucket of water..Then your heart remembers that the love is everywhere and so you feel like you're swimming in it instead..Now you can't even remember what you were going to pray about because the only 2 words left are 'thank you'" Yalda, Perth, Australia "Before learning about the heart, when I prayed to True Source, it felt flat, and I was never sure if my prayers were heard. I remember how I prayed only when I had problems in my life, or because at school or at church a bunch of us were being told to pray together. Words came out of me without any feeling; I was simply reading prayer lines. Now it is completely different: prayers have become beautiful, and I am able to go into a deep state of connection. I feel how I am communicating with True Source-how my prayers reach up to True Source, Lovingly listening, and are accepted with the beauty of Love." Sunny Tjandrakesuma, Perth, Australia

Wednesday Conder/Gordon walk - off leash ovals and mountain views

Bridget will lead this dog-friendly and people-friendly walk through Conder and Gordon offering long and short options. The walk includes two large off leash ovals, a dog paddling opportunity, pretty mountain and lake views, and a longish stretch following a little creek. It's a flat, easy route of about 5.5 km with paved options along the way - except across some grassy ovals. Expect it to take up to 2 hours to complete with a group. However there is also the option of a shorter version - missing the Point Hut Pond loop if you prefer - totalling about 3 km. The walk starts and ends behind the petrol station at the Lanyon Market Place (the local Conder shopping centre), which has plenty of free parking and a dog-friendly venue for our after-walk coffee addicts. You can see more detail about the walk and a google map of the route on our [website](https://www.canberradogwalks.com.au/conder-gordon-walk/). Important info: * You walk entirely at your own risk and you are wholly responsible for your own, and your dog's, behaviour; by rsvping 'yes' to this walk you understand and agree to this condition. * All off-leash activities are at the discretion of the walk guide. If for any reason they feel any dog should be back on lead, please respect their decision, as they are trying to ensure everyone has a pleasant experience. * We ask $7.50 per adult to be paid by card to the guide at the beginning of the walk - children (under 18) walk free of charge. The charge helps cover our meetup subscription, insurance, internet, petrol, and other costs. We will gladly refund this if you are not happy for any reason. * For more information about how we operate our walks, go to our [FAQ page](https://www.canberradogwalks.com.au/canberra-walks-guided-walks-faqs/).
