CHALE WOTE Ghanaian traditional meets Australian contemporary improvised music. Having spent time studying with master drummers in Ghana, Finn Milne’s project “Chale Wote” connects the next generation of Australian improvising musicians with Ghanaian musicians based in Naarm/Melbourne. At the heart of each composition are rhythms originating from across Ghana, with harmony and melody influenced by Finn’s study of jazz and improvisational music. Chale wote means friend let’s go in the Ga language, it is also the word for thongs and the name of a festival held during the Homowo celebrations in Ghana. This project encourages engagement with the diverse African performing arts scene in Australia and celebrates the deep traditions of Ghanaian music. Finn Milne – keys, Abli Laryea – percussion, Quaye Seth – percussion, Quinn Knight – drums, Lily Appelt – bass, Flora Carbo – sax, Kyle Muir – guitar. FLORA CARBO (SOLO)A new project featuring loopy songs, drum machine and saxophone FX - optimistic, sparse, vulnerable, present and direct.Flora Carbo’s solo sets have been described as "Folk-like tunes, wobbly electronics & drum machines in a mix that recalls Arthur Russell’s evasiveness, the Art Ensemble of Chicago’s playfulness, the moody thrill of a late-night trad session, and the intimacy of singer-songwriter performance." (Tone List) ANNWEN ROBERTS Annwen Roberts is a violinist and composer living on Wurundjeri-Woi-Wurrung lands. Her musical pursuit incorporates her folk roots while looking forward to the future of Australian jazz and improvisation.
