Banff Mountain Film Festival (Sat 2pm) + Post-Film Drinks Let’s get a group together for the Banff Mountain Film Festival 2026 - a collection of short adventure and travel films from around the world. We’ll meet outside before the session, head in, and enjoy the films. Seating is reserved, so we may be spread out - but we’ll regroup afterwards for a relaxed drink or bite nearby. I won't be booking tickets for the group, **please purchase your own ticket**. It looks like the session is getting quite booked so maybe get in quick. If you'd like to try and sit near me I've booked Row J Seat 20. Website: https://brisbanepowerhouse.org/events/banff-mountain-film-festival-2026/ **Location:** Brisbane Powerhouse **Date:** Saturday 30 May **Meeting time:** 1:45pm for a 2pm Session Start **Meeting point:** outside main entrance to powerhouse, I'll post specifics on the day **Session:** 2:00pm **Tickets:** Please book your own ticket via the festival website **Plan:** • Meet \~15 mins before the session • Watch the films (approx. 2hr 50min with interval) • Optional café/bar hangout afterwards This is a low-key, easy social—perfect if you want to get out and do something different without a big night. Hope to see you there. **Personal disclaimer:** I've run a number of meetups in the past (in Sydney) and attended many more (all over the world), and I have learned it best not to give anyone my phone number straight away. If you need help or are lost on the day, please use the comments section or send me a message using the meetup app. Also, I expect a level of common sense and independence of those attending these events. While I definitely want to be welcoming and help foster conversation, I won't be baby sitting anyone. At the end of the day, you need to be responsible for yourself - it's just a common courtesy so that everyone can have a good time. Thanks!

Donna Deitch's swooning and sensual first narrative feature, DESERT HEARTS, was groundbreaking upon its release in 1985: a love story about two women, made entirely independently, on a shoestring budget, by a woman. In this 1959-set film, adapted from a beloved novel by Jane Rule, straitlaced East Coast professor Vivian Bell arrives in Reno to file for divorce but winds up catching the eye of someone new, the free-spirited young Cay, touching off a slow seduction that unfolds against a breathtaking desert landscape. With undeniable chemistry between its two leads, an evocative jukebox soundtrack, and vivid cinematography by Robert Elswit, DESERT HEARTS beautifully exudes a sense of tender yearning and emotional candor. Winner of a Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. Nominated for Best Female Lead at the Film Independent Spirit Awards.
