A Bug's Life at The Revival House PerthOn Ant Island, worker ant Flik is an inventor whose well-meaning contraptions always seem to cause disaster. When his latest invention destroys the offering of food meant to appease the bullying grasshoppers led by the menacing Hopper (voiced by Kevin Spacey), Flik volunteers to find warrior bugs to defend the colony. In the big city—actually a gap beneath a trailer—Flik mistakes a troupe of recently fired circus performers for fierce fighters and recruits them. The circus bugs, including a praying mantis magician, a caterpillar clown, a black widow spider, and a ladybug male constantly mistaken for female, go along with the misunderstanding hoping for free food. When the truth emerges and the grasshoppers return demanding double the usual tribute, Flik must rally both the circus performers and his own colony to stand up to their oppressors, proving that even the smallest creatures can make a difference when they work together.Pixar's second feature film showcases the studio's rapidly evolving technical prowess—the ant colony teems with individual characters, while leaves, grass blades, and water droplets demonstrate stunning attention to natural detail. Directors John Lasseter and Andrew Stanton craft an adventure that works as both comedy and underdog story, with the voice cast bringing personality to the insect cast. Dave Foley makes Flik endearingly earnest, while Kevin Spacey's Hopper is genuinely menacing for a children's film. The circus performers provide comic relief and heart, particularly Denis Leary's cranky ladybug and David Hyde Pierce's neurotic stick insect. Randy Newman's score and the film's themes about challenging authority and finding courage resonate beyond the bug world. While overshadowed by the simultaneous release of DreamWorks' Antz, A Bug's Life remains a charming, beautifully crafted adventure.Original format and audio experience of this film faithfully reproduced by The Revival House.
