Beginner/Intermediate soccer @ Tempe Reserve!

**Let's play beginner/intermediate casual soccer at Tempe Reserve**; they have a variety of pitches and it's waiting for you to have a game there. **Meet at the grass area next to the synthetic field - that isn't a comp game**. There will be two games each around 40m wide. There's plenty of free carparking around, and it's also a \~15min walk from Wolli Creek Station. ***Please note***: \- We'll play from 3pm\. Sign up properly\, don't come if only waitlisted\, and arrive on time or not long after or you will have to wait before playing\. \- This group is for beginner and intermediate levels only and we play respectfully\. **If you're advanced, this is *not* the group for you**. Go find some other group to play with. \- Only come if well\. Bring plenty of fluids\, sunscreen\, sunglasses\, hat etc as appropriate\. \- Spread out amongst the 2 games\. DO NOT CROWD IN THE MAIN GAME\. I shouldn't have to yell loudly every time about this one\. \- Downtomeet and Meetup are the main sources of truth for my soccer events\. We also spread the word on the Social Soccer in Southern Sydney and Banter Facebook page\. No other groups or chats should be relied on\. ***\- If you have a soccer ball and/or pump\, bring them along*** to ensure that we start relatively soon after the advertised start time. Also bring along a dark shirt and white shirt (NO GREY / BROWN) for even teams. \- This is **generally a free event** \- once in a blue moon we'll seek donations to help keep the group going or pay for goals\, but this will be disclosed if so\. Cheers! PS. If you liked the game, then support / leave a Review at [https://www.facebook.com/tempesoccer](https://www.facebook.com/tempesoccer) :)

Soulful Mantra Meditation Evening

**We invite you to The Mantra Room, a friendly community sharing spiritual practice of Mantra Meditation, Kirtan & Wisdom & Vegan Meal.** **\~\~** “Mantra” means transcendental sound vibration, sound which transcends the material world. It does not originate in the material world; it originates in the Spiritual World and descends to the material platform without losing any spiritual potency. By the simple process of mantra meditation, our mind and heart are gradually purified of all kinds of stress, worry, misconceptions and deep-seated fears etc. We begin to experience an ever-deepening inner peace and happiness and increasing insights into life. The easiest way of meditating on the mantras is by singing in a group accompanied with musical instruments , which is also known as Kirtan. Rather than being a type of performance, Kirtan is a journey of self discovery. It nourishes our deepest needs for inner peace, happiness, freedom from fear & spiritual love. Be a part of an immersive and interactive mantra meditation experience and join many other like minded people that come to Brisbane’s home of Kirtan [The Mantra Room](https://www.facebook.com/TheMantraRoom.Brisbane)! Everyone is welcome, whether you regularly engage in meditation or never before we encourage you to come along for a special night of chanting. Includes Community Veg/Vegan meal. Volunteering and Donations in supporting these events are greatly appreciated. Namaste! The Mantra Room Volunteers♥

Volleyball Training and Games - Intermediate - B Level (SNHC)

Welcome to Melbourne Volleyball Academy! 🤗 **[[WHAT]]** This session will be broken into 2 halves, 1st half is training and the 2nd half is games. Please arrive on time as we will start exactly at 5:30 PM. Our intention is to have this training be the 'next step' after our beginner-level training at North Melbourne Community Centre. We will be focusing on learning what specific roles on the court entail, improving 'volleyball IQ', breaking bad habits, and building better techniques. **[[WHERE]]** The session will be held as State Netball Hockey centre. Please enter via the main entrance (the entrance with the larger parking lot), we will be on Court 3 & 4, please ask the person at the front desk if you need directions. **[[WHO]]** The training is intended for social volleyball players at the intermediate level or 'B' level (for more details on volleyball levels, please visit our site here: https://melbournevolleyballacademy.com.au/skill-levels-explained). Players are expected to: * pass freeballs and serve receive consistently * have some knowledge of 5-1 (1 setter all around) or 6-2 (back row setter only) systems * help others and have good sportsmanship If you are a high intermediate (BB) or advanced player (A) you are more than welcome to join but you may find our open play sessions for BB/A level players more suitable. For players that are at the beginner level, we suggest attending our training on Fridays at North Melbourne Community Centre 6-9PM as beginners may find the drills and level of play too difficult. Players will be asked to attend a different session if their play is deemed unsafe or if they are not of the appropriate skill level. **[[HOW MUCH]]** $24 card payment will be collected on the day via square (EFTPOS) payment. **[[WHEN]]** The stadium is booked for 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM. However, feel free to come early and stretch as the stadium is open earlier. **Last-minute dropouts and no-shows will have a zero-tolerance policy going forward.** All players are expected to **update their RSVP at least 24 hours** in advance if they are unable to attend. This applies to players on the going list and the waitlist. **[[THINGS TO BRING]]** We ask that you bring: * Water bottle * Appropriate footwear for indoor court shoes - netball shoes, volleyball shoes, or basketball shoes would be suitable. * Wear contacts or sports glasses if possible. **[[OTHER DETAILS]]** Only those on the “going” list are permitted to play. If you are on the waitlist, or not registered at all, you will not be permitted to play.

We invite you to **play around & find out\*** how much fun and solidarity comes from playing together at a table in a beautiful park, forming new social groups and stimulating the mind and imagination. Free and volunteer-powered. In Earthborne Rangers you explore a world with optimistic “solarpunk” themes as you work as a team to succeed together. ER is like Dungeons & Dragons but a nice change from grim dungeon-crawling and disaster-fighting, and has more structure, less improvisation. Learn more about ER [here](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/342900/earthborne-rangers). Lifelong game designer Matthew Ford will teach and play. The first half gives you the general idea. After a short break you can continue into more depth for the next half. You will get invited to events for continued intermediate play. Step 1: RSVP to this event and **fill out the form at [this link](https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1Z31irtO0tZe8dIW7pxdrY2tKaYp8sdoH5XIoUVOffT0/edit)** to state when you would prefer to play. We've face-to-face taught games to over 1000 people of every kind-- join us! Civilization: The West and the Rest

Civilization: The West and the Rest

Meeting at the usual place, The Shakespeare Hotel, 200 Devonshire Street, Surry Hills, on Thursday June 25, we will discuss Civilization: The West and the Rest (2011) by Niall Ferguson. In my opinion (Dale) this is a remarkable work. It asks why a small portion of the earth – 7% of the world's land area – was able to establish capitalism and explore and colonise the world, from about the 1500s onwards. Ferguson argues that the West had a number of 'killer applications.' They included Competition (between states and firms), Science (systematic inquiry and technological innovation), the Rule of law / property rights. Also Medicine (especially modern public health and antibiotics), consumerism (mass markets and demand-driven economies) and the work ethic (especially Protestant-influenced discipline and saving). It is written for an intelligent, lay reader, and is not an 'academic' work. If people have a lot of time, you might also want to read a very short work with which this has been contrasted, *The West and the Rest: Globalization and the Terrorist Threat* (2002) by Roger Scruton. It has been suggested that the former is a serious work of social science, while the latter almost borders on the mystical. The format that seems to work best is that we discuss the book for about 50 minutes in a fairly disciplined way, where one person speaks at a time and everyone gets a turn to speak. My role as a facilitator is to ask provocative questions if everyone agrees. I will play Devil's Advocate where there is consensus. Then I might express my personal views in the last few minutes. The meeting then breaks up and everyone can stay back to further discuss the book or anything else! This books is fairly easily available from local libraries and our friend Anna. Waitlisters will not be accepted to play\.** *** **SAFETY NOTE 1:** **This is a reminder to implement correct ball etiquette for our multi-use courts: when your ball rolls onto another court, DO NOT chase after it.** **Call “ball” and the next player to serve on your court puts their paddle in the air to indicate who the ball should be passed to.** **The court which has received the ball stops playing immediately, the ball is picked up and passed THROUGH THE AIR to whoever is the server needing the ball. Their point is replayed.** **Do not swipe the ball off the court, or roll it on the ground and please ask who the server is. This speeds up the game for both courts and improves safety issues.** **SAFETY NOTE 2:** **When going to and from courts please egress via the perimeter of the venue NOT BETWEEN COURTS. Ensure play has stopped on the courts you are passing and if possible egress as a group, rather than independently, hence minimising the delay caused upon the court you are passing.** **Thanks for your cooperation.** For any queries please message Les via Meetup or add a comment on this event.
