Master the Art of Better Decisions

This interactive session equips you with practical tools to enhance Emotional Intelligence (EI), manage cognitive biases and make better decisions by mastering System 1 (emotional reactivity) and System 2 (logical analysis) thinking where EI serves as the vital bridge between the two. By attending this session you will unlock: * Improved decision making: Reduce the "hidden tax" of cognitive shortcuts. Know when to trust our 'gut feelings' and when to switch to rational thought. * Greater performance under pressure: Learn to recognise triggers and pivot from reactive impulses to deliberate, strategic choices when the stakes are high. * Better collaboration: When you regulate your own System 1 responses, psychological safety flourishes, which leads to better collaboration. * Increased resilience: Build a team that doesn’t just survive volatility but thrives in it. ***Facilitators*** ***[Caidryn Roder](https://www.linkedin.com/in/caidyrn/):*** *Co-founded ProSocia and has over 20 years of experience helping people and organisations thrive. Learn and play co-op board game Earthborne Rangers, in Victoria Park

We invite you to **play around & find out\*** how much fun and solidarity comes from playing together at a table in a beautiful park, forming new social groups and stimulating the mind and imagination. Free and volunteer-powered. In Earthborne Rangers you explore a world with optimistic “solarpunk” themes as you work as a team to succeed together. ER is like Dungeons & Dragons but a nice change from grim dungeon-crawling and disaster-fighting, and has more structure, less improvisation. Learn more about ER [here](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/342900/earthborne-rangers). Lifelong game designer Matthew Ford will teach and play. The first half gives you the general idea. After a short break you can continue into more depth for the next half. You will get invited to events for continued intermediate play. Step 1: RSVP to this event and **fill out the form at [this link](https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1Z31irtO0tZe8dIW7pxdrY2tKaYp8sdoH5XIoUVOffT0/edit)** to state when you would prefer to play. Step 2: **Wait until we send you a message** via Meetup and email stating which time slot we booked you into. Step 3: At your time slot, use the "how to find us" section-- please read it carefully, don't just put destination into a map app. Look for Matthew in a blue hat and gray beard. Free event. Nothing to bring or prepare. Come as you are, even if you know absolutely nothing about it. **We welcome absolutely everyone and ensure a supportive and inclusive atmosphere**. We've face-to-face taught games to over 1000 people of every kind-- join us! Read all this event info and comments carefully both ahead of time and **just before you attend,** as our location and method may change slightly. **How to find us at The Lookout in Victoria Park:** * [From QUT Kelvin Grove campus](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1mhSbmU82uMWKtQMD6ofhV0vuypU_9gMwybbtNEj6Z_s) * [From Centenary Aquatic Centre in Spring Hill](https://docs.google.com/document/d/15odzo0s6OsFT0NfyFWeSRbNZRLMkfemD8JOMetsxu20) \* Bonus info for all who care: As stadium developers approach Victoria Park/Barrambin, they will **find out** how much our community values this special place. Two promise-breaking Olympic stadiums are slated to be built in Victoria Park. Let's **help them find out** why they had better leave this park as undisturbed as possible. We are not led by [www.savevictoriapark.com](http://www.savevictoriapark.com/) or the [Goori Camp Embassy](https://www.instagram.com/gooricampembassy/) but those are a good way to learn more. Hey stadium developers, here we are! Play Around and Find Out! :)

FREE: Walk the Kangaroo Point - Green Bridges - City loop

Join us for a walk around the Kangaroo Point - Green Bridge loop. We'll meet outside Joey's Cafe. We walk across the top of the Kangaroo Point cliffs, along the Southbank waterfront, across the Neville Bonner Bridge through old city Botanical Gardens, about 5 city blocks, then back over the new Kangaroo Point Green Bridge, along Main Street to The Pineapple Hotel. The Walk is about 7kms and takes about 80 to 90 minutes. Meet at 5:55pm (or earlier) for 6:00pm Start. Walk at your own pace as we stop at a number of catch up points along the way so you won't get left behind. Well behaved dogs on leads are welcome, but the dinner venue is not. Relax... Even if it your first time, we aim to make all feel welcome and it's a good idea to turn up a little early. Optionally... After the walk, we stop at the Pineapple Hotel for dinner and / or a drink, a great way to socialise in a group setting. The conversation is more dynamic in the group setting, so if your a bit shy you can enjoy being a listener, if there's a topic your passionate about, you can jump right in on it. The menu can be found here: https://pineapplehotel.com.au/garden-bar/ There is free parking from 5pm near Joey's Cafe, the Pineapple Hotel and the streets between. Plan on arriving a little early (10-15 minutes) we can have a chat and you have a buffer if traffic is poor. We do leave on time and once started I don't get a chance to check for messages as it is unsafe do while walking. If there is mild rain I'll do the walk, but, if it is pouring down or well set in, I'll just do dinner. Remember we are all adults so... I thank you as my guests that you bring your manners and be respectful! Please keep your RSVP up to date. It is seen by Meetup and your host as a sign of disrespect of you are a 'No Show' thank you. PLEASE NOTE This is NOT a formal organisation and has no public liability insurance. We are a group of people who get together, taking full personal responsibility at all times. Eating Food and Telling Stories: Malaysia

Eating Food and Telling Stories: Malaysia

A small dinner with strangers, stories, and delicious Malaysian food. Food has so much to tell - every dish carries memories. Enjoying the taste is great, but food becomes even more enjoyable when we know the story behind it. This event is not a lecture or a food tour; it is a dinner where we’ll eat together and talk about why we eat what we eat: how dishes travel, how flavours create memories, and how food becomes part of identity. I’ll guide the evening by choosing the dishes and sharing short stories about Malaysian food, ingredients, history, and culture, but the best version of the night is a conversation. Everyone is invited to taste, react, ask questions, and add their own perspective. It will be fun - we might debate the long-running Malaysia-Singapore nasi lemak rivalry, explore how laksa reflects centuries of migration, or look at how trade and colonial politics transformed flavours that many people now think of as traditional. You do not need to know anything about Malaysian food. You might be trying it for the first time, or you might have grown up eating it. Either way, the point is the same: to enjoy great food with good company and discover the stories behind the dishes. Coming alone is very welcome. Coming hungry for food and stories is even better. * Group size: 4-6 people * Duration: Around 1-1.5 hours * Cost: Free to attend; everyone pays for their own food and drinks, likely around $30–35 per person * The exact venue and dishes will be shared several days before the event. We'll be sharing a selection of dishes as a group, which is central to the experience. Because of that, this event may not be suitable for people with dietary restrictions

Tricky Tuesday @ The Peacock Inn

Welcome to the **Tricky Tuesday** Meet Up! This is a smaller event in most respects - smaller capacity, smaller games - but still the same sized fun! Come join us to learn a new game and meet some new people. * This event was created primarily to play and explore **modern** **trick taking games** and **smaller card games** which can be played on more limited table space. * As this is a smaller event, please note it is a bit more casual. Find the group at the table/s, come over and join - we're a welcoming bunch. * Please **bring some games** to this event if you can and be prepared to teach them if you do. **There are** **no games available at the venue** but I will always bring a few. Please consider others when coming and in the lead up to the event. We want as many people there as possible. If you are unable to attend mark yourself as such as soon as you can so others can be notified and attend. There's an FAQ below but if you have any questions please don't hesitate to reach out. Your tricky friend, Dave **FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS** **What is a trick taking game? Good question you handsome person.** * Generally speaking, a trick taking game is a card game which is played in a series of rounds known as ***tricks***. * Each trick is evaluated to determine a winner or ***taker*** of that trick and then will usually start - or ***lead*** *-* the next trick. * The goal is usually tied to either winning or losing a number of tricks. This may also come in the form of you guessing how many tricks you will win - known as a ***bid***. * Some games may have a suit that always wins - known as a ***trump***. * Most trick taking games are **competitive** needing between 3-5 players, others are **cooperative**, there are also solo and two-player trick taking games as well! * Popular trick taking/trick taking adjacent games you may have heard of: [The Crew](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/324856/the-crew-mission-deep-sea), [Skull King](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/150145/skull-king), [Cat in the Box](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/345972/cat-in-the-box-deluxe-edition), [Scout](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/291453/scout), [Fox in the Forest](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/221965/the-fox-in-the-forest), the classic games of [Spades](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/592/spades) and [Hearts](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/6887/hearts), **What makes a Trick Taking game fun?** * There's so much to trick taking games! They're generally quick to teach, quick to play, have interesting decision spaces, and a wide variety of novelty. Even the classics though can be played thousands of times without getting tiresome. Part of the fun is in the interaction with others, assessing their moves and countering them, and how to win (or lose) at the right times. You have to stay on your toes, adapt frequently, and keep tabs on the other players, what they have played, and what they may play next! **Do I need to know how to play/have played a trick taking game before?** * Not at all, but it is good to understand the basics and general terminology so you can pick things up a bit easier on the night. You can check out [this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7O7QyhKmCsk) for a bit of a general breakdown . **Is this event free?** * Yes, but please support the venue by purchasing a drink or two. **I'm on the waitlist can I still come?** * Unfortunately, no. We have limited capacity and must abide by it. **I don't have a game to bring, is that okay?** * Generally it will be okay, but it is encouraged to bring and share a game where you can! You can always bring a standard deck of cards or tarot cards and learn a card game or two as well! **Can I bring a guest?** * Unfortunately, unless they have signed up too it won't be possible. We have a strict limit on guests and the event would fill up too quickly otherwise. **How do I get to the venue?** * The 86 Tram is your best bet and has a stop pretty much right outside of the venue. * There are two train stations (Westgarth and Northcote) which are within walking distance. * Parking is available in the area but can get busy. If you don't mind a little walk there is parking down the adjacent street. **Dave, I worry you will win all the games we play. Such an intelligent and beautiful man, you must be a master of the tricks, is this true?** * Firstly - thank-you for the kind words, but secondly - no. I suck at trick taking games and lose more than I win. Yet, I enjoy them for their variety, high interaction, and quick nature regardless. You will be fine if you don't take things too seriously. It's about fun and meeting people... (but if you do beat me too often I will ban you from the group and venue...).
