Learn and play co-op board game Earthborne Rangers, in Victoria Park

We invite you to **play around & find out\*** how much fun and solidarity comes from playing together at a table in a beautiful park, forming new social groups and stimulating the mind and imagination. Free and volunteer-powered. In Earthborne Rangers you explore a world with optimistic “solarpunk” themes as you work as a team to succeed together. ER is like Dungeons & Dragons but a nice change from grim dungeon-crawling and disaster-fighting, and has more structure, less improvisation. Learn more about ER [here](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/342900/earthborne-rangers). Lifelong game designer Matthew Ford will teach and play. The first half gives you the general idea. After a short break you can continue into more depth for the next half. You will get invited to events for continued intermediate play. Step 1: RSVP to this event and **fill out the form at [this link](https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1Z31irtO0tZe8dIW7pxdrY2tKaYp8sdoH5XIoUVOffT0/edit)** to state when you would prefer to play. Step 2: **Wait until we send you a message** via Meetup and email stating which time slot we booked you into. Step 3: At your time slot, use the "how to find us" section-- please read it carefully, don't just put destination into a map app. Look for Matthew in a blue hat and gray beard. Free event. Nothing to bring or prepare. Come as you are, even if you know absolutely nothing about it. **We welcome absolutely everyone and ensure a supportive and inclusive atmosphere**. We've face-to-face taught games to over 1000 people of every kind-- join us! Read all this event info and comments carefully both ahead of time and **just before you attend,** as our location and method may change slightly. **How to find us at The Lookout in Victoria Park:** * [From QUT Kelvin Grove campus](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1mhSbmU82uMWKtQMD6ofhV0vuypU_9gMwybbtNEj6Z_s) * [From Centenary Aquatic Centre in Spring Hill](https://docs.google.com/document/d/15odzo0s6OsFT0NfyFWeSRbNZRLMkfemD8JOMetsxu20) \* Bonus info for all who care: As stadium developers approach Victoria Park/Barrambin, they will **find out** how much our community values this special place. Two promise-breaking Olympic stadiums are slated to be built in Victoria Park. Let's **help them find out** why they had better leave this park as undisturbed as possible. We are not led by [www.savevictoriapark.com](http://www.savevictoriapark.com/) or the [Goori Camp Embassy](https://www.instagram.com/gooricampembassy/) but those are a good way to learn more. Hey stadium developers, here we are! Play Around and Find Out! :)

**10:15 AM – 10:30 AM \| Pre\-Shoot Meetup \-** Chambers Coffee ***Location: **Grab a coffee at Chambers Coffee Gateway Circular Quay Foodcourt Gateway Retail, 1 Macquarie PIace Sydney NSW **10:30 AM – 11:00 AM \| Customs House Square** -** Time Allocation: **30 minutes. *** Environmental Shooting Prompts:** *** The Isolated Subject: **Use a wide focal length to capture a single person walking through the massive, sharp geometric shadows cast across the plaza by the skyscrapers. The human element highlights the sheer, overwhelming scale of the financial district. *** Modernist Frames: **Position yourself near the glass and steel of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) annex. Frame passing locals trapped between layers of sharp, high-contrast architectural reflections and deep window recesses. **11:00 AM – 11:35 AM \| [Nurses Walk](https://www.google.com/maps/place/Nurses+Walk,+The+Rocks+NSW+2000/@-33.8598892,151.2082795,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x6b12ae42efae7765:0x64eba1f577e36025!8m2!3d-33.8598892!4d151.2082795!16s%2Fg%2F1tk6w1nk?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI2MDYxMC4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D) & [Suez Canal](https://www.google.com/maps/place/Suez+Canal,+The+Rocks+NSW+2000/@-33.8594987,151.2083423,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x6b12ae42e81df571:0x3b81a9d527dcd740!8m2!3d-33.8594987!4d151.2083423!16s%2Fg%2F11f5_6w2f4?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI2MDYxMC4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D)** *** Time Allocation: **35 minutes.** *** Environmental Shooting Prompts: ***The Sandstone Trench: **Stand deep within the pitch-black shadows of [Suez Canal](https://www.google.com/maps/place/Suez+Canal,+The+Rocks+NSW+2000/@-33.8594987,151.2083423,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x6b12ae42e81df571:0x3b81a9d527dcd740!8m2!3d-33.8594987!4d151.2083423!16s%2Fg%2F11f5_6w2f4?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI2MDYxMC4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D). Shoot a wide or environmental portrait of a person stepping directly through the narrow "spotlight" of midday sun cutting down into the alley, illuminating them against the dark, gritty heritage brickwork. *** Contextual Silhouettes: **Frame tourists or locals exploring the historic signs and gas lamps of [Nurses Walk](https://www.google.com/maps/place/Nurses+Walk,+The+Rocks+NSW+2000/@-33.8598892,151.2082795,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x6b12ae42efae7765:0x64eba1f577e36025!8m2!3d-33.8598892!4d151.2082795!16s%2Fg%2F1tk6w1nk?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI2MDYxMC4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D), capturing them completely in silhouette against the brightly lit streets at the end of the lanes. **11:35 AM – 12:10 PM \| The Argyle Cut & Argyle Stairs** *** Time Allocation: **35 minutes. *** Environmental Street Prompts:** *** The Cavernous Exit: **Stand inside the dark, monumental sandstone cavern of the Argyle Cut. Capture pedestrians walking toward the blindingly bright exit, using the massive chasm walls to frame the human subjects as small elements in a historic landscape.** *** Piano Keys Shadow (Argyle Stairs): **As you walk halfway through the Argyle Cut tunnel, turn right and ascend the** Argyle Stairs. Near midday, the sun cuts across the steps, creating harsh, horizontal black-and-white lines like a piano keyboard. Shoot from the bottom looking up (or top looking down), waiting for a subject to climb the stairs and break these harsh geometric lines. ***The Antique Lamp Post Silhouette: **These historic steps feature classic British-style iron lamp posts. The midday sun casts their intricate silhouettes sharply against the weathered sandstone walls. Underexpose for the highlights (making the wall bright and the shadow pitch-black), and capture a pedestrian passing through this graphic frame. *** Brutalist Frames: **At the top, turn right onto Cumberland Street and walk past the iconic brutalist** Sirius Building **. Take the public pedestrian shortcut passing through it. Use the raw concrete grids and square frames of the architecture to encapsulate people walking past, contrasting their organic shapes against harsh concrete boxes. ### 12:10 PM – 12:30 PM \| George Street Heritage Zone -** Time Allocation: **20 minutes. ***Environmental Street Prompts:** ** *Temporal Compression: **Walk south along George Street toward the station. Switch to a longer lens. Use the compressed perspective to frame modernly dressed shoppers and commuters interacting right in front of the shadow-mapped textures of 19th-century brick pubs and historic facades. *** Chasing Midday Light Pockets: **At 12:00 PM, the tall buildings on George Street create intermittent, bright pockets of light on the footpaths. Lock exposure on one of these bright zones. Use a slightly slower shutter speed to blur the crowd rushing by in the shadows, leaving only the person walking through the light zone sharply defined. **12:30 PM \| Arrival at The Ship Inn** Walk just one minute around the corner from the underpass to** The Ship Inn **(Pitt St & Alfred St) to pull up a table, grab a cold drink or lunch, and review everyone’s environmental monochrome frames!
