Community Assembly - AI & Data Centres

Community Assembly - AI & Data Centres

Artificial intelligence and data centres are reshaping how we live, work, and use energy. Right now, the Federal Government is asking for input to influence how this important technology shapes our future. This is a real opportunity for community voices to reach the people making decisions about our collective future. The problem is that formal consultation processes can feel inaccessible; full of technical jargon, unclear on process, and easy to scroll past. That's exactly why we're running this community assembly. Rather than feeling overwhelmed or just venting into the void, come and do something about it. This is a free, volunteer-run, in-person session designed to give you: * Context — a plain-English overview of the inquiry and what's at stake for our communities, environment, and economy * Space — a safe, welcoming environment for open discussion, whatever your background or level of expertise * Support — practical guidance to help you formulate and submit your own perspective directly to the inquiry.
No technical expertise required. Just curiosity and a willingness to have your say. We believe that diverse perspectives lead to richer outcomes, and on something as consequential as AI and data centres, we need as many of them as possible! Come and help shape a future we can all look forward to. Register here for a free ticket: https://events.humanitix.com/community-assembly-ai-and-data-centres

Philosophy Roundtable: Art

A painting that brings a person to tears. A banana worth 6.4 million dollars. A photograph ending a war. What is behind these phenomena? Please join us this Sunday to discuss the Philosophy of Art, where it comes from, what makes it powerful and why it is a universal across time and cultures. We will meet at the Captain Melville at 2pm for a 2:15pm start sharp. **Please note the new $5 mandatory donation entry fee** (cash or transfer on day) to help with MeetUp subscription costs, venue costs, etc. There is no pre-requisite preparation necessary, nor a philosophical background, all that is required is a curious mind. These discussions are both a Socrates Cafe style discussion and lively metaphysical dojo, in the spirit of learning and friendly debate, so please feel free to challenge assumptions and be prepared to have your own assumptions challenged. This event is also posted to the Socrates Cafe group. We will explore the topic through a range of questions, including: **What is Art?** * What comes to mind when we use the word ‘Art’? What are the categories of objects or activities that you would consider to be art? * Which of these are art?: https://drive.google.com/drive/u/1/folders/1_1nl2_GKbGzzSbXsRRsnAZlkmNVqWPjm **Emotion** * Is art a luxury or necessity in life? Is it essential to happiness? * Why is art so effective at making us feel powerful emotions, even when we know it doesn’t represent reality? Are these ‘true’ emotions, or somehow different / simulated? * Why do we sometimes seek our art that makes us feel sad? **Objectivity** * Is there such a thing as objectively bad art? * Are there intrinsic properties that make something aesthetic (beautiful)? Are they universal? * Are there objective standards of ‘taste’? Can one person be said to have better taste than another? If so, on what basis or criteria? **Value** * What gives art its value? Why do we consider replicas differently? Is naturally occurring beauty different to art? * What compels humans towards art? Is there an evolutionary / biological explanation for the seemingly wasteful expenditure of resources on outputs that have no practical function? **Creativity** * Are only humans able to appreciate art? * Are only humans creative? * Is there such a thing as something truly new, or is every idea or expression a recombination of existing inputs into a different configuration of outputs? * Can a machine be creative? If not, what is the constraint? * Could we ever regard AI-creativity in the same way as that of a human? Hope to see you there!

This is to assist running the event as smoothly as possible for the organiser and the players & also to reward loyalty (members and regular players and those who turn up on time). **No-shows:** No shows are disrespectful towards the organiser and the other players (especially those on the waitlist) and will now be given 2 chances/warnings and banned on their 3rd "no-show". This includes yourself and any +1 guests you have reserved a spot for. To avoid a no-show, make sure you **update your RSVP before 9am** of the morning of the meetup (i.e. Sunday morning 9am). **This also applies to those on the Waitlist**. If you are on the waitlist, there is a chance you will be moved to the "Going" list, so if you will no longer attend, ensure you change your RSVP to "Not going" by 9am (day of event). **Questions:** If you have any questions, please ask. Note that the organiser(s) may be busy in the hours leading up to the event, so if you have any questions, please ask them early enough. Note that if your question has been addressed in this description and you simply have not bothered to read it, you may not get a response. And of course you won't know that if you haven't read this, but then who's fault is that? If this all makes sense and you agree, come join us for some good wholesome fun. See you at the park! **Location:** We play in the large flat open area opposite the Kiosk/Cafe (with toilets) and children's playground. Hi everyone, and welcome to our very first event! Since I’ve traveled to 50 countries before settling here in Melbourne, the idea of combining travel, daily living, and creating art is a massive passion of mine. To kick off our community of "dreamers and doers," we are hosting a relaxed weekend coffee meetup to connect, share, and get inspired. Whether you are a full-time professional artist or an entrepreneur exploring painting like I am, this is a casual space to meet face-to-face and build our local network over a great cup of Melbourne coffee. **Here is what we’ll be doing:** * 🎨 **Show & Tell:** Bring a sketchbook, your iPad, or just pull up some photos of your work on your phone. Let's celebrate what everyone is currently creating or exploring! * 🤝 **Network & Connect:** Swap Instagram handles, share industry contacts, and find your new creative accountability buddies. * 🌍 **Main Topic - Art Residencies & Coliving:** Have you ever done an art residency? Are you dreaming of joining a creative coliving space overseas or right here in Australia? Let's share resources, research, and dreams about blending travel with our artistic practices. **What to bring:** * A piece of your art (physical or digital) or a work-in-progress to share. * Your business cards, portfolio links, or social handles. * Any info, questions, or experiences you have regarding art residencies! I can't wait to meet you all and hear about your creative journeys. RSVP so I can make sure we grab a big enough table!

Read about the fun and addictive sport of Pickleball below!!!!! Pickleball is a paddle sport you can learn in minutes and play for a lifetime. It brings together elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong to create a sport that’s fun for all ages and skill levels, but gets fast-paced and exhilarating at competitive levels. How is pickleball different to other net sports? * It’s easier to pick up than many net sports * It’s lower impact than tennis, so it’s easier on the body * It focuses on quick reflexes and aiming, rather than spiking the ball, powerful serves, or running speed These differences open pickleball up to a greater range of players. Whether you’ve been playing tennis your whole life, or you’re walking onto a court for the first time; whether you’re young, old, or in between; whether you’re strategic and competitive, or just want to get involved in something fun, social, or active… pickleball is for you.

School of life - Sydney fan meetup, difficult questions deck

This event is in person! To find the room, walk into the car parking area from the street at 14 Frances St, walk to the end of the car park (to the left of the building) and enter in the side pedestrian gate. Walk straight down the pathway to the back building and up the stairs. Look for the signs to Skyview Hall! As part of the school of life Sydney meetup we host a discussion focused on the difficult questions deck. We flip a difficult question and then ask the group to answer. Some examples include, "what makes a good listener?" and "if you could own any piece of art, what would it be?", "who was a childhood role model other than your parents?" Join us for questions like these and more. We hope to have you join us in this journey of self discovery. If you’re reading this, you’re invited. Please don’t feel like you “won’t be welcome” just because you’re new, demographically different from the average member, or hate the School of Life and everything it stands for. You’ll be fine! We usually meet every 3rd Sunday of the month at 4pm. 0438481143 to contact us if you get lost. This event is free for first time participants, then $10 if you are coming back for more! The cost covers the room hire, snacks and helps with making sure people are committed to attending. If you struggle to pay the cost, please get in touch to talk about it. You can also pay via Payid to 0438481143

Monday Social Bootcamp Fitness Session

Welcome to Sydney's greatest social bootcamp! We are a large group of young professionals that love working out with friends on Mondays and Wednesdays. Most of our members tell us they found their best friends in Sydney thanks to us, and we hope you do too. You're guranteed to be personally introduced to 20-30 young professionals upon arrival. Our group is a huge network of people built up over many years (we're the first social bootcamp) and our members join us for regular social and big parties. You can find us on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2128070553991231 Bootcamp is FREE for the first 20 people who RSVP to each session and then a thrifty $5 for everyone else. To keep it fair, the rule is if you RSVP in the first 20 spots, but later change your RSVP to "not going" (at any time), there's a $20 fee. Location: (see map) Elizabeth St foopath near Museum Station bus stand C Bootcamp meeting location, where the park's footpath meets Elizabeth St next to Museum bus stand "C". From the ANZAC monument walk 75 meters straight down the footpath to Elizabeth St. This is also close to the statue of bullets (Aboriginal War memorial). It's also 75 meters from Museum Station (corner of Elizabeth St & Liverpool St) but there are some blue construction fences between the meeting point and Museum Station. Please make sure you update your RSVP for each session (you can do this on the Meetup app). It's helpful to check who is going to each session. If you're a newbie, keep an eye out for the "Regulars". These guys and girls come to bootcamp consistently and give 100% effort at each session. They are also people you're most likely to see again and become friends. We currently have 20 Regulars, growing each month. Arrival: Please arrive at 6:20pm. Check in with an organiser, say hi to old friends and new. If you're not free, please have a $5 note. Unlike other Meetup groups, we are pedantic about keeping our attendance list accurate. That's why it's important you RSVP. Please have a Meetup photo that clearly shows what you look like. This helps the instructors and other bootcampers to remember you. FAQs How much does Bootcamp cost? FREE for the first 20 RSVPs in each session - see above. To qualify for the free list, you must arrive by 6:25pm (and introduce yourself to all the newbies if you've been to more than 6 bootcamps and aren't a newbie yourself--this doesn't apply to newbies but ensures that all newbies are introduced to lots of the regulars). What should I bring? As little as possible as there are no lockers or storage unfortunately. Bring what you can carry while you run. How fit do I need to be? You should be above average fitness, with no health conditions or injuries. Our workouts are highly organised and vary from week to week but as a test, you should be able to do: 60 second plank, 20 sit ups, 20 squats, 20 pushups (on the knees for girls) and 20 jumping jacks. You should also be able to jog for at least 3km without stopping. How many people attend? On average, about 20-30 or so people come each week. We prioritise members that have fun, work hard and make friends. How do I find you? Look for a group of people dressed to exercise at our meeting spot. During bootcamp, if you do not feel well enough to exercise or have an injury, you should let someone know and leave the session immediately. Exercise with your head as much as your body. Attending any bootcamp session is absolutely at your own risk. We accept no responsibility or liability for any loss, injury or damage arising in any way. We want you to have fun and meet new people while you workout, but only if you're already reasonably fit and healthy. We are after all an organised recreational group and your leaders are not certified or professionally acknowledged, so you should accept this if you attend. We hope you understand. Have fun.
