Philosophy Roundtable: Art

A painting that brings a person to tears. A banana worth 6.4 million dollars. A photograph ending a war. What is behind these phenomena? Please join us this Sunday to discuss the Philosophy of Art, where it comes from, what makes it powerful and why it is a universal across time and cultures. We will meet at the Captain Melville at 2pm for a 2:15pm start sharp. **Please note the new $5 mandatory donation entry fee** (cash or transfer on day) to help with MeetUp subscription costs, venue costs, etc. There is no pre-requisite preparation necessary, nor a philosophical background, all that is required is a curious mind. These discussions are both a Socrates Cafe style discussion and lively metaphysical dojo, in the spirit of learning and friendly debate, so please feel free to challenge assumptions and be prepared to have your own assumptions challenged. This event is also posted to the Socrates Cafe group. We will explore the topic through a range of questions, including: **What is Art?** * What comes to mind when we use the word ‘Art’? What are the categories of objects or activities that you would consider to be art? * Which of these are art?: https://drive.google.com/drive/u/1/folders/1_1nl2_GKbGzzSbXsRRsnAZlkmNVqWPjm **Emotion** * Is art a luxury or necessity in life? Is it essential to happiness? * Why is art so effective at making us feel powerful emotions, even when we know it doesn’t represent reality? Are these ‘true’ emotions, or somehow different / simulated? * Why do we sometimes seek our art that makes us feel sad? **Objectivity** * Is there such a thing as objectively bad art? * Are there intrinsic properties that make something aesthetic (beautiful)? Are they universal? * Are there objective standards of ‘taste’? Can one person be said to have better taste than another? If so, on what basis or criteria? **Value** * What gives art its value? Why do we consider replicas differently? Is naturally occurring beauty different to art? * What compels humans towards art? Is there an evolutionary / biological explanation for the seemingly wasteful expenditure of resources on outputs that have no practical function? **Creativity** * Are only humans able to appreciate art? * Are only humans creative? * Is there such a thing as something truly new, or is every idea or expression a recombination of existing inputs into a different configuration of outputs? * Can a machine be creative? If not, what is the constraint? * Could we ever regard AI-creativity in the same way as that of a human? Hope to see you there!

Coffee & Connections: Topic Finding Art Space

Hi everyone, and welcome to our very first event! Since I’ve traveled to 50 countries before settling here in Melbourne, the idea of combining travel, daily living, and creating art is a massive passion of mine. To kick off our community of "dreamers and doers," we are hosting a relaxed weekend coffee meetup to connect, share, and get inspired. Whether you are a full-time professional artist or an entrepreneur exploring painting like I am, this is a casual space to meet face-to-face and build our local network over a great cup of Melbourne coffee. **Here is what we’ll be doing:** * 🎨 **Show & Tell:** Bring a sketchbook, your iPad, or just pull up some photos of your work on your phone. Let's celebrate what everyone is currently creating or exploring! * 🤝 **Network & Connect:** Swap Instagram handles, share industry contacts, and find your new creative accountability buddies. * 🌍 **Main Topic - Art Residencies & Coliving:** Have you ever done an art residency? Are you dreaming of joining a creative coliving space overseas or right here in Australia? Let's share resources, research, and dreams about blending travel with our artistic practices. **What to bring:** * A piece of your art (physical or digital) or a work-in-progress to share. * Your business cards, portfolio links, or social handles. * Any info, questions, or experiences you have regarding art residencies! I can't wait to meet you all and hear about your creative journeys. RSVP so I can make sure we grab a big enough table!

School of life - Sydney fan meetup, difficult questions deck

This event is in person! To find the room, walk into the car parking area from the street at 14 Frances St, walk to the end of the car park (to the left of the building) and enter in the side pedestrian gate. Walk straight down the pathway to the back building and up the stairs. Look for the signs to Skyview Hall! As part of the school of life Sydney meetup we host a discussion focused on the difficult questions deck. We flip a difficult question and then ask the group to answer. Some examples include, "what makes a good listener?" and "if you could own any piece of art, what would it be?", "who was a childhood role model other than your parents?" Join us for questions like these and more. We hope to have you join us in this journey of self discovery. If you’re reading this, you’re invited. Please don’t feel like you “won’t be welcome” just because you’re new, demographically different from the average member, or hate the School of Life and everything it stands for. You’ll be fine! We usually meet every 3rd Sunday of the month at 4pm. 0438481143 to contact us if you get lost. This event is free for first time participants, then $10 if you are coming back for more! The cost covers the room hire, snacks and helps with making sure people are committed to attending. If you struggle to pay the cost, please get in touch to talk about it. You can also pay via Payid to 0438481143

Reiki Fire & Pizza - open to everyone

Reiki is all about balance so we have six seats for men, six seats for women. These circles are open to anyone curious about Reiki or anyone in need of a deeply relaxing experience and a chance to throw something into the fire to let it go. Ronnie will lead you through an easy to follow meditation while her team of Reiki Students and practitioners give Reiki to everyone in the circle. It’s a wonderful opportunity to experience the relaxing, nurturing, balancing energy of Reiki. Reiki Master/Teacher Ronnie Maree will use her years of experience with circle work, meditation and Reiki to hold a safe supportive space for you to breathe, relax, expand and connect to create a moment in time to let go of something old and bring new dreams into your life. Choose something you want to let go of, by writing a few words down on a piece of paper to burn in the candle flame. We also write down things we want to bring into our lives. Arrive from 5.45pm ready to start the circle at 6.00pm. Stay on for Pizza and drinks from 7pm for great conversations with a friendly group of people. Feel free to enjoy a wine if you like. $20 donation on entry would be gratefully appreciated if you would like to enjoy some pizza or make a smaller donation if you can bring something to share for supper 🙏🏻 Ronnie embraces all forms of supportive energy work and invites other practitioners to support her in the circle work in their own way, so please let me know if you just want to receive, or if you would like to help. Master the Art of Better Decisions

This interactive session equips you with practical tools to enhance Emotional Intelligence (EI), manage cognitive biases and make better decisions by mastering System 1 (emotional reactivity) and System 2 (logical analysis) thinking where EI serves as the vital bridge between the two. With over 30 years of experience in the financial services industry (and over 15 as a financial planner), Scott prides himself on delivering sound financial planning "with a minimum of BS". His goals are to help his clients reach retirement with enough funds to enjoy it, plus provide guidance so that their money lasts as long as possible (hopefully longer than them!), by taking a personal approach which moves beyond just numbers and working out what is important to clients. We are excited to hear from Scott as he shares his expertise in navigating Government Assistance, Superannuation, Managing Debt, Retirement and Pension, Self Managed Superfunds, small business advice and how to grow your assets! Scott is a perfect complimentary business for all psychologists, business brokers, bookkeepers and business coaches. Venue cost is $40.00 a head, includes your meal, and advance bookings ARE ESSENTIAL! Ask us more when you register your attendance.

At this hour, people's shadows compress directly under them. Capture subjects moving across the asphalt, treating the road as a clean, minimalist white canvas cut by short, ink-black human shadows. * **The Cavernous Exit:** Stand inside the dark, monumental sandstone cavern of the Argyle Cut. Capture pedestrians walking toward the blindingly bright exit, using the massive chasm walls to frame the human subjects as small elements in a historic landscape. **12:10 PM – 12:30 PM \| Circular Quay Station Underpass** * **Time Allocation:** 20 minutes. * **Environmental Shooting Prompts:** * **The Glowing Commuter:** Stand inside the dark concrete underpass looking out toward the ferry wharves. Capture commuters as they transition from the bright harbor sun into the shade, utilizing the intense midday sun to catch sharp, glowing white rim-light on their hair, shoulders, and profiles. * **Ghostly Crowds:** Use a slower shutter speed to capture the chaotic rush-hour environment. Keep the heavy structural iron columns tack-sharp while the streams of people turn into motion-blurred, ghostly textures moving through the dark transit hub. *** **12:30 PM \| Arrival at The Ship Inn** Walk just one minute around the corner from the underpass to **The Ship Inn** (Pitt St & Alfred St) to pull up a table, grab a cold drink or lunch, and review everyone’s environmental monochrome frames!

FREE: Walk the Kangaroo Point - Green Bridges - City loop

Join us for a walk around the Kangaroo Point - Green Bridge loop. We'll meet outside Joey's Cafe. We walk across the top of the Kangaroo Point cliffs, along the Southbank waterfront, across the Neville Bonner Bridge through old city Botanical Gardens, about 5 city blocks, then back over the new Kangaroo Point Green Bridge, along Main Street to The Pineapple Hotel. The Walk is about 7kms and takes about 80 to 90 minutes. Meet at 5:55pm (or earlier) for 6:00pm Start. Walk at your own pace as we stop at a number of catch up points along the way so you won't get left behind. Well behaved dogs on leads are welcome, but the dinner venue is not. Relax... Even if it your first time, we aim to make all feel welcome and it's a good idea to turn up a little early. Optionally... After the walk, we stop at the Pineapple Hotel for dinner and / or a drink, a great way to socialise in a group setting. The conversation is more dynamic in the group setting, so if your a bit shy you can enjoy being a listener, if there's a topic your passionate about, you can jump right in on it. The menu can be found here: https://pineapplehotel.com.au/garden-bar/ There is free parking from 5pm near Joey's Cafe, the Pineapple Hotel and the streets between. Plan on arriving a little early (10-15 minutes) we can have a chat and you have a buffer if traffic is poor. We do leave on time and once started I don't get a chance to check for messages as it is unsafe do while walking. If there is mild rain I'll do the walk, but, if it is pouring down or well set in, I'll just do dinner. Remember we are all adults so... I thank you as my guests that you bring your manners and be respectful! Please keep your RSVP up to date. It is seen by Meetup and your host as a sign of disrespect of you are a 'No Show' thank you. PLEASE NOTE This is NOT a formal organisation and has no public liability insurance. We are a group of people who get together, taking full personal responsibility at all times. By attending an activity, you agree automatically to take full responsibility for yourself.
