Wednesday Conder/Gordon walk - off leash ovals and mountain views

Bridget will lead this dog-friendly and people-friendly walk through Conder and Gordon offering long and short options. The walk includes two large off leash ovals, a dog paddling opportunity, pretty mountain and lake views, and a longish stretch following a little creek. It's a flat, easy route of about 5.5 km with paved options along the way - except across some grassy ovals. Expect it to take up to 2 hours to complete with a group. However there is also the option of a shorter version - missing the Point Hut Pond loop if you prefer - totalling about 3 km. The walk starts and ends behind the petrol station at the Lanyon Market Place (the local Conder shopping centre), which has plenty of free parking and a dog-friendly venue for our after-walk coffee addicts. You can see more detail about the walk and a google map of the route on our [website](https://www.canberradogwalks.com.au/conder-gordon-walk/). Important info: * You walk entirely at your own risk and you are wholly responsible for your own, and your dog's, behaviour; by rsvping 'yes' to this walk you understand and agree to this condition. * All off-leash activities are at the discretion of the walk guide. If for any reason they feel any dog should be back on lead, please respect their decision, as they are trying to ensure everyone has a pleasant experience. * We ask $7.50 per adult to be paid by card to the guide at the beginning of the walk - children (under 18) walk free of charge. The charge helps cover our meetup subscription, insurance, internet, petrol, and other costs. We will gladly refund this if you are not happy for any reason. * For more information about how we operate our walks, go to our [FAQ page](https://www.canberradogwalks.com.au/canberra-walks-guided-walks-faqs/).

There will be food, networking and some surprise swag!Agenda: 6:20 - Intro 6:30 - Talks 8:00 till late - networking & chat (& drinks optional)Speakers and Talks: Talk 1: Olga Mirensky - Senior Staff Site Reliability Engineer @ Ping Identity Olga and Her Agent Attended AI Engineer Conference. Lessons Learned What happens when you let an experimental Stand-In Agent run loose against a live conference environment? To follow the fast-paced sessions of an AI Engineer conference, I built an agent while at the conference. The agent monitored talks and distilled what actually mattered to me - filtering for high-value signal and turning it into specs ready to implement or articles I should read. I started with a different platform, but pivoted to an ADK agent deployed to GCP Agent Platform. Identical system prompt, different platform architecture, different LLM - completely different outcomes. This talk is a transparent look at what happens when agentic experiments meet reality, including an architectural runaway bug that burned 1M tokens per minute. We look past the hype and focus on the real engineering rigour required to build purposeful agents, with four key takeaways: * The Purpose Filter: Why does your agent care about this specific talk? If it’s not highly unique, you’re just automating noise. * Architecture > Hype: The gap between what you expect and what actually happens at runtime and why. * The Personalised Flywheel: High-signal distillation requires deep context about you, your team, and where you are in your journey. * Clear Goal Setting: Moving from “autonomous” to “purposeful”. In the replay demo I’ll walk through my flywheel showing how the agent filtered the content in real-time, picked up on tech I am interested in, turned it into an implementable spec, and how AI tools can close the loop to further automate the entire implementation, testing, and release cycle. Talk 2: Sahil Bahadur Devkota - Full Stack Developer Beyond LLMs: why RAG is equally important In this talk, I'll break down how RAG works, why is it really important in real-world and it's popular architectural pattern. We'll look at the core components of a RAG pipeline, discuss it's implementation approach, and cover some of the key things to think about when building an AI applications with RAG. Whether you're working with AI or building application that need accurate responses, you'll leave with a practical understanding of when RAG make sense - and when it doesn't. Talk 3: Abhijeet Kumar - AI & Automation | Cloud enthusiast Beyond RAG: Building an Agentic "Second Brain" with FastAPI, pgvector, and Gemini Move beyond static note-taking apps. This talk explores Project NeuralFortress—a custom, Python-built knowledge management system designed to actively synthesize information. We’ll walk through evolving a basic RAG script into an agentic pipeline using FastAPI for routing, Neon PostgreSQL (pgvector) for vector storage, and Google Gemini for cognitive processing. In Development (Sneak Peek): A brief look at experimental features currently in testing to make the system fully autonomous: GraphRAG: Mapping multi-hop relationships beyond standard vector distance. MCP Integration: Native database queries directly from your code editor. Async Watchers: Autonomous background web scraping and data ingestion. How to find us: Doors open at 5:45 PM at our host the Mantel Group, Level 2/452 Flinders St, Melbourne. Message via Meetup or Slack if you are arriving after 6:00, as the lifts won't let you up. Your Career in the Age of AI — Sydney In-Person Meetup

## AI Is Rewriting the Rules of Work — Are You Ready? In 2026, AI-driven structural change is still accelerating. From tech giants to the Big Four banks, job demand across the Australian market is being redefined — some roles are disappearing, but many more new ones are being created. RAG Engineer, AI Product Manager, AI Agent Developer… roles that didn't exist before now appear on the hiring lists of major companies. Opportunity never waits. If you haven't figured out where you stand, you may already be falling behind without realising it. ### ✨ Why This Isn't Just Another AI Talk JR Academy is bringing something different to Sydney for Chinese-speaking students and working professionals — Not a "look how powerful AI is" trend talk. Not a course sales pitch. But a live, hands-on session for making your own career decisions in the age of AI. We want to help you answer three very specific questions: Where does my career stand right now? Where is my window of opportunity? What's my next move? The whole evening follows one clear throughline: **See the risks → Lock in the opportunities → Understand human-AI collaboration → Find your own path → Walk away with a 90-day action plan** ### 🕒 What You'll Actually Accomplish This Evening **💡 Start with a career "health check"** **🔥 A live "Career Risk Heatmap"** We'll aggregate everyone's assessment results on the big screen — how many people are in the high-risk zone, the questions causing the most anxiety, and which backgrounds are most concentrated. You'll see it clearly: you're far from the only one facing this. **💼 Real, actively hiring AI roles, broken down one by one** No vague trends — just the roles you can actually break into: what each role really does, who it suits, and the first skill to build. **🗣️ Guest Panel: What companies actually want** No taking turns reading slides — our guests will tackle the real questions head-on: * Should new grads build their fundamentals first, or jump straight into learning AI? * Is it too late for people from non-technical backgrounds to enter the AI field? * Do companies want "people who can use AI tools," or "people who can solve problems with AI"? ### 🎁 Meet the Guests Both guests bring deep, hands-on experience in their respective fields: **Lightman Wang** Founder of JR Academy and former Microsoft engineer. He has long provided recruitment advisory services to multiple unicorn companies and is deeply involved in talent development and career planning in the AI era. **Michelle** Currently Associate Director – Delivery Practice at Optus, with extensive experience in Business Analysis, project delivery, process optimisation, and enterprise-level digital transformation. She has worked at major organisations including Cisco, Optus, Deloitte Australia, and Westpac Group — spanning technology, telecommunications, consulting, and finance — bringing rich experience in enterprise project management, agile delivery, and cross-team collaboration. Michelle holds a Bachelor's in Computer Science from Wuhan University, an MBA from Melbourne Business School and CEIBS, and certifications including PMP, PMI-ACP, and SAFe Agilist. Both guests sit at the forefront of their industries — and they'll tell you, from a real hiring and team-building perspective, what AI talent companies are genuinely looking for. ### 🛤️ Find Your Own AI Career Path CS / Data / non-technical / upskilling while employed — whatever your background, there's an entry path for you, complete with concrete 90-day action recommendations. ### 💥 Live Career Diagnosis Hot Seat Our guests will give live feedback on 2 real participants' career situations. Even if you're not the one on the spot, you'll find yourself relating from the audience: *isn't that exactly me?* ### 🎁 Before You Leave: Your AI Career Action Pack It includes a career roadmap suited to you, a 90-day action checklist, resume / LinkedIn optimisation tips, a collection of standout quotes from the guests, and access to a 5-minute career direction consultation. ### 🧑‍💻 Who This Event Is For * **New grads job-hunting in Sydney** — sent out dozens of applications with no response, unsure what's missing * **Those 1–2 years out of graduation still without a relevant role** — lacking local experience, referrals, and direction * **Professionals with 1–5 years of experience** — worried about being sidelined by AI, wanting to upskill but unsure what to learn * **Career changers from non-technical backgrounds** — business, Data, BA, operations, marketing, and education backgrounds all welcome * **Prospective students still deciding** — wanting to see in person whether JR Academy is worth the investment ### 🏆 Three Things You'll Walk Away With **1\. Insider perspective on what companies really need 🔍** Our guests come straight from the industry frontline and have taken part in real company hiring. You'll hear things you can't usually access: * What HR actually looks for when scanning resumes, and which skills are most in demand * Which roles' hiring standards are quietly shifting * What AI talent traits companies value most * Which path into the AI field has the most potential, and how to break in quickly You won't find this content on any public platform — it only happens in this room, face-to-face with the guests. **2\. Real connections to grow your professional network 🤝** Among a group of people with similar backgrounds and shared goals, you'll have the chance to build genuine professional connections, meet people with referral resources, and grow a valuable network. **3\. Saturday Conder/Gordon walk - off leash ovals and mountain views

Saturday Conder/Gordon walk - off leash ovals and mountain views

Canning River Regional Park loop starting @ Lo Quay River Café (12km)

Canning River Regional Park loop starting @ Lo Quay River Café (12km)

A nice walk in the park for a Saturday. The long range **forecast suggests a cool, wet day** with temperatures from 14°C when we set off to 16°C when we sit down for a coffee. The park is the largest of eight regional parks within the Perth metropolitan area. It lies in the Whadjuk Noongar Country. We start at the **Lo Quay River Café** and walk in a figure eight around the river for a pleasant 12km easy loop. A delightful section takes us over the Kent St Weir and then on the Castledare Miniature Railway line. This is mainly a parklands walk but spoiled by about 500m of urban walking. It has a labyrinth of trails traversing groomed parks, forests, woodlands, beautiful wetlands, salt marshes and billabongs. Plenty of birds but not much other wildlife. **Where:** Meet up near the **Lo Quay River Café**. Click on the map to find the **exact location** of the pin drop where we will gather. **Parking:** Plenty of parking at the MeetUp point. **Difficulty:** This is not a challenging walk but the 12km distance means you should only attempt it if you are a **regular walker**. The paths are mainly bitumen paved walks & cycleways but also some hard packed gravel tracks and a little bit of sandy tracks. If the tide is high you might get wet feet. There are no mountains to climb. **What to bring:** We try to stay as close to the river as possible as it has reasonable shade. Additionally good walking shoes and an umbrella / spray jacket. **Toilets:** At the 6km & 9km points and the end of the walk **Café after the walk:** Sadly our favourite café in this area is closed due to renovations but they have a coffee van and still manage to cater for our needs very well. **All trails maps:** [Canning River Regional Park loop (12km)](https://www.alltrails.com/explore/map/canning-river-regional-park-12km-c82a717) **A little about the park.** * The Kent St Weir was built in 1928 to prevent salt water moving upstream and destroying the alluvial soils of the market gardens. This allows for two different ecosystems to exist side-by-side, making this Regional Park an important refuge for a variety of bird and other wildlife. * The park itself has 97 species of birds, which is approximately half the number of species recorded on the Swan Coastal Plain, many of these birds using the area to breed in. Commonly spotted waterbirds include cormorants, swamp hens, ibis, pelican, egret, ducks and spoonbills. * Reptiles including the Western Longneck Turtles which abounds, maybe a lizard or two and apparently a shy snake. * Several sites of historical importance include Woodloes Homestead, Mason’s Landing sawmill, Kent Street Weir, Castledare Boys Home and the Australian Sikh Heritage Trail. **RSVP** \- no shows & late arrivals: If you are on the "Going" list and can't make it on the day please RSVP "Not Going" at the earliest convenience as a courtesy so as to allow others to join who might be on the "Waitlist"\. *We aim to set-off for each walk at the advertised time and as a general rule, we set off on-time for each walk.* **IMPORTANT** By confirming your attendance attendees agree to "WAIVE, DISCHARGE CLAIMS, AND RELEASE FROM LIABILITY" the organisers, co-organisers, event organisers, volunteers and members of the *Walking Mates Australia Meetup Group* from any and all liability on account of, or in any way resulting from Injuries and Damages, even if caused by negligence, in any way connected with *Walking Mates Australia*. Attendees further agree to HOLD HARMLESS the organisers, co-organisers, event organisers, volunteers and members of *Walking Mates Australia Meetup Group* from any claims, damages, injuries or losses caused by their own negligence while a participant on the Event.

Between Worlds; Exploring Shamanic Consciousness in Contemporary Australia

When people think of shamanic journeying, psychedelics are often the first association. Yet in most traditions, altered states of consciousness are more commonly entered through other methods. These practices shift awareness away from linear and rational thinking into symbolic and imaginal ways of experiencing the world. A central focus of this talk is the role of mythology and symbolism as a map and compass for navigating these inner states. Mythology is not treated as abstract story or merely superstition, but as a living framework that helps organise experience, guide inner journeys, and support processes of healing and transformation. Archetypes, symbols, and mythic narratives form a structured language for making sense of what is encountered in altered states, both for individuals and communities. The talk also explores how these traditional mythological maps overlap with modern psychology. Contemporary approaches to the mind increasingly recognise symbolic processes, layered identity, trauma patterns, and the need for integration - areas long addressed within myth-based systems of understanding. We will look at how altered states are safely accessed and navigated, and how myth and symbolism provides orientation within them. Finally, the talk considers the relevance of these approaches in the modern world, particularly in contemporary Australia - offering ways of engaging meaning, psychological insight, and connection to self, others, and place through direct experience. **Guy** is a traditionally trained and initiated sangoma. A sangoma is a traditional healer of Southern Africa, effectively a shaman of the Zulu and related Nguni cultures. Born and raised in South Africa, he is one of only a handful of westerners that have undergone the long and intense ordeal of thwasa (the formal traditional training and initiation process) in order to become initiated into the traditions of the Southern African traditional healers. Guy is also a Ceremonial Leader and initiated shaman in the Spirit of the Earth Medicine Society (SOTEMS), a non-profit Australian organisation which is dedicated to developing new forms of Australian Spirituality and healing based on traditional healing (shamanic) methods for contemporary Australians. **The MTS is committed to providing events that align with and further The three objects of The Theosophical Society:** * To form a nucleus of the universal brotherhood of humanity, without distinction of race, creed, sex, caste or colour. * To encourage the study of comparative religion, philosophy and science. * To investigate unexplained laws of nature and the powers latent in the human being.
